Esperanza Spalding- Spontaneous Inspiration

Spalding is a 23 year old bassist/vocalist with an impressive resume of accomplishments. On full scholarship to Berklee school of music, Esperanza not only finished early, but did so to join the Berklee faculty, becoming the youngest faculty member there. Brought up classically, Spalding played the violin throughout all of high school until her "spontaneous" encounter with the bass that changed her musical direction:

"I walk into this room, and it literally — it's kind of below street level, and light was shining in, and the bass was just there with no case on it, because they just bought it. And I walked into the room and picked it up and just started playing."

From here began Spalding's romance with jazz and the blues and her passion for the bass. There is something simply majestic about her presence, scatting over a giant bass with a mane of a 'fro. She brings something to the table in the genre of contemporary jazz, singing in both spanish and portuguese. Esperanza is just what her name suggests: a hope for the revival of jazz.
